"Smokestack Joe (Manchin)" has announced that he will absolutely NOT support the Democratic Party's "Build Back Better" program.

He says it will cost too much and therefore hurt our economy.

Let's see... Just a few days ago Congress authorized more than $780 billion for the "Defense" Department for 2022. That is the expenditure for a single year! Included in those funds are monies to expand our nuclear capability, prefect hypersonic missiles, develop autonomous weapons that can select and destroy targets without any human intervention, and other general increases in our ability to wage war. The United States spends more on the military than China, India, Russia, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea, Italy, and Australia combined!

On the other hand the proposed "Build Back Better" program involves a fraction of the money we have just committed to spending on the military. A fraction! BBB is a $1.8 trillion 10 year program... compare that with $780 billion for a single year. A fraction! Build Back Better is a strong investment in our country's future!

So what is in the "Build Back Better" program that is so incredibly objectionable to Smokestack Joe?

Well, the BBB bill contains funding for a wide range of programs to control drug prices and health care costs, and includes measures to add dental coverage for seniors to Medicare. It strengthens support for childcare and other costs for parents. Only an idiot would think those are bad? What really galls Manchin is that it would build out our economy and help fight global climate change by funding the transition form use of highly polluting fossil fuels to clean and renewable energy. Manchin is in the pocket of the fossil fuel industry. How can he support a transition away from dirty skies?

Well, there is a chorus of voices calling out Manchin for torpedoing economic and social progress in America. But, Smokestack Joe has already let us know that his yacht has already sailed on this issue!

Joe doesn't understand how climate destruction became a dirty word!

A classic pollution song

The 1993 Movie "Pelican Brief" was based on a book of the same name by John Grisham.
It is a tale of a totally corrupt president who needs to be able to add a politically aligned judges to the supreme court by filling unwilling vacancies.
John Grisham's portrayal of this president is a frighteningly apt anticipation of Donnie Trump.

In the movie there is a scene where Donald... uh... I mean the president... is shown training his Lindsey Graham (appropriately portrayed by tail-wagging dog.
Again... so true to life!

Once upon a time Lindsey Graham feigned honesty and integrity, but all that changed once Donnie took office.

And now? Well, let's just say that Graham is at the front of the line when it is time to pay respects at Trump's hindquarters...

There is a reason that Graham is wearing this "shit-eating grin"!

The state is poised to enact new legislation to make it more difficult to vote.
It includes measures to hinder voting by mail, and a measure to make it a crime to give water to people standing in line to vote. (I'll guess they'll tack on a poll tax later)

Yesterday, while touting the state's new "anti-riot" law designed to curb demonstrations (but still permit streets-gone-wild spring break partying), Sheriff Grady Judd of Polk County, flanked by a phalanx of white men, offered advice to any who move into Florida: "Welcome to Florida. But don't register to vote and vote the stupid way you did up north."

The good 'ol boys have spoken. Now you know what is acceptable in Florida.

Leila Centner, cofounder of the Centner Academy (Which bills itself as "The Brain School"!) has warned staff to not get vaccinated against COVID-19. Citing crack-pot fantasy reports about bad mojo wafting off people who have been vaccinated, Centner contends this is a necessary step until the safety of students and staff can be assured.

Centner is requiring all staff to submit private medical information related to vaccination to the administration warning of severe action if employees submit false information.

This "school" is well-known for its connections to the general anti-vax nutcase community, and both Leila Centner and her husband David also have a history of massive donations to right-wing causes including so much in donations to Donald Trump that they needed to switch their recipient to a phantom PAC group to circumvent campaign limits.

One must wonder if this school is feeding off any public funds in their efforts to brainwash kids and undermine efforts to fight the pandemic!

Earlier this week temperatures plummeted in many areas of the United States. One of the hardest-hit states was Texas, where a combination of factors left millions without electricity: 1) To save money, they did not prepare the supply-delivery power chain for cold weather. 2) As part of an arrogant, infantile "go-it-alone" mentality, Texas refused to participate in a national power-grid sharing plan meant to help balance supply/demand in critical situations.

Record cold temperatures / Map of power outages

So, what do you do if you are a Texan, confronted with freezing cold, lack of electricity? What do you do if you know your neighbors are suffering?

Well, if you are Ted Cruz, the notorious right-wing extremist who eagerly promoted Trump's election lies, you light-out to a sunny Mexican beach resort.
Who cares if your constituents are suffering, who cares if we are still struggling with a pandemic. Ted Cruz channeled the battle-cry made famous in Monty Python's "Holy Grail":

Run away! Run away!

Cruz was caught on camera at the airport, and boarding the plane to Cancun.
This evidence of his cowardice caused an understandable uproar, and he returned to Texas the next day with an ever-changing rationale for his actions.

On the other hand, a variety of people across the country did what they could to pitch-in and help the suffering people of Texas.

For example, from far-away New York, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez raised more than $2 million to help fund relief efforts. She tweeted "Charity isn’t a replacement for good governance, but we won’t turn away from helping people in need when things hit the fan.
People understand that now is the time for collective action and doing what we can w/ whatever we’ve got."
In addition she promised to fly to Houston to help local leaders at a food bank.

We must also recognize the efforts of small-businesses in Texas who stepped forward in the spirit of community unity.

Jim McIngvale of Gallery Furniture opened his stores (which were equipped with their own generators) as refuges for community members needing warmth and comfort.

McIngvale personally helps out. Click the photo to read the Washington Post story.
